Cook the Book: 'The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics'

20071224-msclassics.jpgLast week's Cook the Book was The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The Original Classics. This week, we're highlighting its companion book, The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics. The New Classics expands upon the original book, offering a range of tried and true recipes from the more recent years of Martha's 16-year run.

As always, we'll be giving away five (5) copies of the book. All you have to do is tell us, in the comments here, if you've ever cooked from a Martha recipe and, if so, what.

Five winners will be chosen at random from among the commenters, and the comments will remain open until Monday, December 31 at noon. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

I've never cooked anything by her.

I made a couscous salad from an Everyday Food magazine. It was tasty, and friends request I bring it to potlucks, so I consider it a success.

pumpkin cupcakes from Martha Stewart Living. i added chopped chestnuts to the batter, and they turned out y-u-m-s-y.

I made one of her christmas cookies once, but I am in awe of her obsessive-compulsiveness, her sheer willpower and dominance, and her ability to overcome the adversities that have befallen her. (I'd like to see if Oprah would be able to make a comeback after being forced to spend 16 months in prison for committing that victim less crime.)

No, sadly I have not cooked a Martha Stewart recipe. :(

However, once you send me one of these cookbooks, I will cook away! :)

Thanksgiving Turkey

Applesauce cookies. awesome variation on oatmeal raisin. We'll be making the mac and cheese (posted last week) today.

Never cooked one of her recipes. They do look good though.

I think I made a lemon pasta that was her recipe.

i once made her banana bread from a much earlier book.

I made lasagne with spinach and smoked ham.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I may have used her pate brisee recipe.

I've made blueberry and cherry pies. Salmon and asparagus couscous, and too many appetizers to name! Love Martha!

never actually had a chance to make anything of hers yet

Although I've not made any of Martha's recipes I will when I WIN the book!

Never used one.

yep, chocolate cake

Mmmm....Coconut Cream pie with the chocolate macroon crust.

Never cooked a Martha recipe, something I would like to remedy.

tons but i actually just remade a cashew chicken recipe

I made marshmallows one time. They were friggin' awesome.

Tried her Latkes recipe once. Was a disaster :-(

Never used one - but have eaten several - all delish!

I actually have never made a Martha Stewart recipe, but if I win the cookbook...

Gingerbread, and some awesome little walnut cookies.

Never cooked a Martha recipe, but if I win this book, I will!

I haven't tried a Martha recipe yet but winning this book would be a great chance to start!

her creamy tomato soup (featured last week on SE, so thanks guys!)

I never have made a Martha recipe, but I have always wanted to.

i have not only made her recipes, i own quite a few pieces from the martha stewart home collection from macy's cellar!

I've baked her "Lemon Tassies" cookies (tedious but SO GOOD). In fact, I'm making them again in a couple hours...

Alexis' Chocolate Chip Cookies - a great favourite among friends!

I make a breakfast casserole that is supposedly her daughter's favorite on Christmas day. I have started making it Christmas morning for family. It is easy and delicious!

I made some lovely apple tarts once, using a filling recipe from the Martha Stewart website and a different crust recipe. They were great!

Also I've made brownies from one of her recipes.

Onion soup - delicious!

linzer tarts, from her baking cookbook!

Never cooked one, hope to soon!

Zuppa Inglese made by pastry chef John Barricelli for Martha's mother's birthday (the late Martha Senior).

Martha's pie crust recipe is my standby

Marhta's pear and dried cherries pie is enjoyed by family and friends as much as my apple and dried cherries pie.

I've baked a key lime pie and a raspberry tart from her books. The key lime pie was one of the *best* I've tasted - and my guests agreed with me!

No, I've never cooked from a Martha Stewart recipe. I read a profile of her--in The New Yorker? the Sunday New York Times Magazine?--in the late '80s or early '90s that noted her habit of observing Good Things and referring to them as "Fantin-Latour moments." I've been kind of averse to her ever since.

But now that I read that Mario Batali is cooking some of his Christmas dinner from her recipe, I'm afraid it's time for me to break down and jump on the gravy--the bordelaise?--train...

I tried the ricotta cheesecake a few times and it was divine!

Haven't yet, but hope to!!!

I've made a lot of Martha recipes--most recently, the Buttermilk Baked Chicken with Spinach Salad from Everyday Foods recipe, except I subbed out pork chops for the chicken.

not yet but i'm planning on making those espresso drop cookies

Meatloaf 101 and it was great!

not yet, but i've made ornaments that were her idea.

fried chicken (although I think she was working from a Chris Kimball recipe)

rosemary shortbread cookies. pretty, pretty, pretty good.

the Sweet and Salty Cake from her TV show, but the recipe is actually from the bakery "Baked"

The only Martha recipe I have or have made is the one for Chocolate-Espresso Snowcaps. Easy to make, VERY good espresso flavor, and not overly sweet. They were THE hit of the holiday cookie plates this year!

chocolate chip cookies...good as any I have found

The last Martha recipe we tried was her split pea soup. It was yummy!

A turkey, sugar cookies, cranberry shortbread, and assorted other cookies. They were all quite good.

i've made a few things from the everyday food magazine and those have turned out well.

I make several of her Christmas cookie recipes every year -- this year included Black Forest Cookies which were amazing. I subscribe to Everyday Food and make about one recipe from every other issue - very few have been failures.

I made the pound cake from her baking handbook and the baking time was incorrect. The center was pure liquid, so I had to keeping it going until it was done properly. Usually her recipes are excellent - I've been using her books for 20+ years.

Friends and I combed through her books for my bridal shower and wedding. We wound up using more decorating ideas then recipes.

One of the recipes we did use was for chunky chicken fruit salad. I'm a big fruit fan, so I added a few more then listed, such as large ripe Michigan cherries! It was such a big hit that the bowl was wiped clean within thirty minutes!

No, but I would like to!

I made her Roast Turkey dinner.

I often make the "cookie of the month," an eagerly anticipated event in my house. The favorite, thus far, is a giant chocolate sugar cookie.

I made an applesauce that I found on her website. It was apple season up in Minnesota (I went to college up there, and there was a nice Orchard in town), and we would go pick apples every year. You end up with so many apples that you just don't know what to do with them all. We decided to make some applesauce, and I figured I might as well follow Martha's lead and do it up right. It worked pretty well, and was a lot easier than I expected from the queen of "good things."

I swear by Martha Stewarts Sugar Cookies. They are the only ones I make during the holidays. I can spot a martha Stewart sugar cookie in a friend's plate of cookies a mile away. Not yet, but I'd love to use this cookbook as my first opportunity!

Martha has a peasant-y goulash dish that I make every year on Halloween called "Ghoul-ash". 5# beef chuck, 5# onions, broth and paprika; cooked all day, it melts down to simple red perfection. Serve over buttered noodles, with a dollop of sour cream. Our friends know to stop by our Halloween open house, and there isn't much of this stuff left at the end of the night. Making me hungry!

Mmmmmmm... Martha

I have not cooked any Martha recipes, but I've always wanted too!

Mom was a die-hard Martha fan, and had all her cookbooks and magazines. I copied many of "Mom's" recipes, that came from MS. She is gone now and I'd love to have a MS cookbook.

Martha's "Severed Finger" cookies - totally goulish - the kids go crazy over them.

Hot Crab Dip, my father-in-law's favorite. The recipe came packaged in her Christmas Jazz Favorites CD.

I tried to make a chocolate cakes out of layers of crepes like she did on her show, but...well...I'm no Martha Stewart! I did however learn to soak chicken in buttermilk before frying and that has workd well for me. Happy New Year y'all!

Soaking chicken parts in buttermilk before frying or sauteing makes it very moist, PLUMP and tender. I use to jot down recipes while watching her old TV show - favs that I remember are her Crab Cakes, Mac & Cheese and an odd sound (but very simple to make and delicious Pasta with Three Garlics (roasted, sauteed and a little raw - with parsley, olive oil and Parmesan cheese) - it tastes much better than it sounds! (If you love garlic...)

Simple syrup for lemonade.
