We've got another New York Nostalgia package from Russ & Daughters to give away today.
I've known Russ & Daughters' Mark Federman and his family ever since I came to New York 32 years ago. When I knew very few people here I used to just come to Russ & Daughters to kibitz and just feel like I belonged somewhere. It's a place I still visit for shelter from any storm. And for the company and the Russ family's incredible food. They know smoked fish like very few other people in this world.
What's in this package of New York Nostalgia? One pound of Gaspé Atlantic smoked salmon. A half-pound of sliced smoked sable, one pint house-cured herring fillets in cream sauce with pickled onions, one pound of natural cream cheese with chive, eight authentic New York bagels, one pound of old-fashioned rugelach, and a piece of old-fashioned marble halvah. it's actually Russ & Daughters! I come home to NJ every year to spend Christmas with my family - it's my father's job to, while he's in the city for work, swing by the shop to pick up some goodies for Christmas Eve (herring!) and Day (lox galore). This is the first Christmas for me as a wife, and since my husband will be joining us, the more the merrier they say!

I lived in NYC for 8 years and remember Russ's well (a few blocks away.) My favorite is STILL bagels, cream cheese, chopped liver, whitefish salad, smoked salmon (with capers, red onions, fresh dill)... - While I can find all of these items here in Chicago - the quality just doesn't compare. When I lived in New York there was a little Polish restaurant on 3rd in the East Village. They had all the regular breakfast food but I lived on stuffed cabbage rolls...Glunke with mushroom gravy (my spelling I'm sure is way off). My dad used to host Men's club meetings at our house on Sunday mornings. The cooking was always done by my dad and a gentlemen named Leo Saperstein. He was famous for his eggs and onions. He would slice the onions somewhat thin and then in a cast iron pan would caramelize them until they were nice and deep brown. Then he would pour in the eggs and cook them slowly until it became a onion and eggs custard. Leo has since passed away but Sunday brunches are never complete without those eggs!! Accompanied, of course, with a sesame bagel and schmear. Oy vey is mir!!

My favorite brunching experience in NYC is going to Carnegie Deli with my father and my husband and ordering up a smoked fish platter, onion bagels, potato knishes, cheese blintzes, matzo-brei and half-sour pickles. Those are some seriously good times!

Gosh, I live in Biloxi, MS and we lost our only Deli to Hurricane Katrina. I remember though how we would to go synagogue and then go to the Deli for brunch. We would have lox and bagels topped with chive cream cheese. It just made you feel so good. I envy all of you who live or have lived in NY and hope someday to see the state and city which offers so much! Happy Holidays and good luck everyone!

Twenty-five years ago I went to the original Carnegie Deli, before they became a movie thing, and had a bagel with lox, cream cheese, sliced onion and capers. It was so huge I made 2 meals out of that sandwich. I still can taste it... P.S., I don't think it cost me more than $8.00.

Being the daughter of a bagel baker (grand-daughter and niece too. My
grand-dad was one of the small group that introduced bagels to the US. Back then, the 1920's up to the 1950's, it was an item sold in Jewish neighborhoods. I was raised living over the bakery (not a bagel shop ... a real bakery with brick ovens) in Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY), every Saturday
night my Dad would ride over to Banner Smoked Fish and buy the broken
pieces (mostly tails) of baked salmon, sturgeon, sable and carp and
Sunday morning, while reading the Sunday papers, we'd brunch on
bagels andour fish. To this day my favorite brunch is a bagel (a REAL
bagel .... one that was boiled and not large ..... hard crust ... meaty
malty inside) schmeared with butter and filled with carp or sable, a slice
of onion, and a slice of tomato.
