Bacon as a Gateway Meat

From yesterday's New York Times: " 'We find over and over again that bacon is the conversion meat,' Ms. Standen said. 'Bacon is how vegetarians change their minds.' " Not an entirely new concept (we've heard it before), but we always like pointing it out.

A truer statement may never have been published in the Grey Lady.

I've had at least three friends who came back for the bacon, and another who created a "bacon exemption" to her vegetarianism.

As a former veghead (of 16 years no less) I have to be truthfull... it was bacon which done it. Damn you pig!

For me it was a hot dog. There is something magical about cured meats.

Bacon, while seemingless harmless in itself, is often a stepping stone to more serious pork products.

It was ribs for me.

it was prime rib for me... i once had a vegetarian boyfriend who ate bacon, because it was "candy meat".

Padma Lakshmi, in an interview on The Splendid Table, said that her mother encouraged her to eat meat (so as to be more American), then wanted her to switch back to vegetarianism (for health reasons). There was no turning back, though, once she'd tasted bacon.
