Win Your Thanksgiving Turkey!

Do you know where you're getting your turkey this year? Not yet? Then we've got a contest for you! The good folks at D'Artagnan are providing us with a turkey a day to give away to one lucky Serious Eats reader. Today happens to be the last day of the contest, so get in while the gettin's good.*

20071109dartagnan.pngD'Artagnan is a purveyor of many things delicious—from pâtés to sausages, foie gras to wild mushrooms, game meat to truffles. But what we're especially interested in right now is their turkey.

D'Artagnan's certified organic birds are fed organic grains and pure spring water—no protein supplements, added poultry or fish byproducts, pesticides or herbicides. Additionally no antibiotics, no growth hormones. The result is a poultry with great flavor, tenderness, and a 25 percent lower fat content than standard commercially raised turkey.

We will be giving away 12- to 14-pound organic free-range birds for the duration of the contest. Contest open only to participants in the continental U.S.

Win a Turkey

To enter to win, just answer the following question in the comments below:

White or dark meat?

One (1) winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. Feel free to enter every day, but you may win only once during the lifetime of the contest. Comments for this entry will be open until 7 a.m. ET tomorrow (Nov. 19). The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

*Sorry, but we have to limit shipping to the continental U.S. Birds will be shipped from D'Artagnan no later than Monday, November 19.

Dark meat, bebbeh!

dark of course

White, and whatever few bites of dark I can steal away from my husband.

Dark. And skin.

A little bit of both if I can get any dark meat away from my boyfriend.

White. Definitely.

White, with skin on Thanksgiving, and then dark meat for leftovers. I find white meat gets too dry the day after, but dark meat just gets better and better the day(s) after.

I'm with EtherMaiden -- white the day of (preferably with gravy), dark for leftovers. Also skin.

Dark Meat is juicier and more pronounced in flavor. In fact I will usually buy a 3-pack of drumsticks to make my own turkey broth for the stuffing, gravy or a soup course.

Dark meat preferred, but will eat either on a sammich the next day.

White meat or dark meat? I have to go with dark meat just for the heavier game flavor and the ability to stand up to reheating for leftovers. My favorite use of left over dark meat is to saute fresh aromatics like diced celery, carrots and onions. To the pan I'll add large diced pieces of bread dumplings (spaetzle would also work) and cook until the veggies are soft, the add the shredded turkey, heat through, then add turkey gravy to the mix and again heat through. I always make plenty of stuffing to have for leftovers so I'll cut a nice thick slice of stuffing, microwave for a minute on a plate then serve the turkey mixture poured on top. YUM! Put a little cranberry sauce on the side and you're in leftover heaven.

Hmmm, how about a turkey and foie gras terrine with truffle sauce? D'Artagnan a little help.

dark. preferably with some skin attached.

Always white, unless I'm making sandwiches and then you need a little dark for flavor.

white - with bacon

White meat, baby...until you're making a post-feast casserole...that's when the dark meat comes in handy

Both! with skin.

Both, unless the white meat is too dried out!

I used to be a white-meat only kind of girl, but then I tasted the dark for the first time recently, and it was so moist and juicy and flavorful. Now it's dark for me!

both for me!

white meat

Dark meat please :)

white! yummm...

white meat for me

White! A little dry is good. Better contrast with the moist dressing and the slathering of sweet potato puff I give it.

white, with gravy

white with crispy skin mmmm

dark, with gravy.

juicy dark meat

dark, of course

Both, though I do eat the dark first

Dark meat has all the flavor and juice, so I go with that if it's a whole turkey. You could also just roast the breasts by themselves; when you do that, it becomes much easier to cook them properly, without drying them out. Even then, the white meat has relatively little flavor though.

dark dark dark dark dark.

mmmmmmm dark meat. It so succulent and full of flavor. A shame all these turkeys are bred for a plethora of white meat, they should really just have giant thighs! (laughing picturing how those birds would look)
White or dark, the best thing about turkey is the leftovers. Turkey soup with wild rice and mushrooms is just.......over the top yummy.

dark meat! although i always have 1 piece of white - have to check to see if it's moist or on the dry side. love to eat the succulent oyster and the tail too - especially if it's crispy!

dark meat. yum!

dark. then white for leftovers on a sandwich.

delicious dark meat!

Dark meat for eating hot, white for making stuffing/turkey/gracy sandwiches.

A tiny sliver of white, drowned in gravy or mashed squash. I only ever ate one turkey that I tasted and liked. Most of my thanksgiving memories are of bird-shaped sawdust.

I'm a stickler for white, but my grandmother instilled in me the glory of dark meat as well. All I know is that I'm almost always the one finishing off the leftovers and being picky gets in the way of tastefully cleaning out the fridge. ;)

Please make mine white with gravy!

i like white and dark...

White meat, which is why I'm perfectly happy buying bone-in turkey breast rather than a whole turkey.

the white stuff

White. So good on sandwiches the next day.

white meat is for those who don't know enough to ask for dark meat

Dark, and a little bit of white, plus some crispy skin!

white with skin

didn't you already ask this question?

Both.

...cook, chef, culinary sponge, traveler, volunteer, missionary.
tyronebcookin

Still dark meat.

Dark because it is much moister but both make great sandwiches!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!!!!

white, please

I like a little bit of both.

I definitely gravitate toward the dark meat, but I do like to get a bit of both for sure.

Dark... or white with gravy

dark meat for thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and white meat for the sandwiches with all the trimmings later in the week

white meat, always

Dark. Without a doubt.

Give me a thigh, and a wing, please.

No meat. Side dishes! Lots of side dishes!

White breast meat, sliced with a rind of crispy skin.

White, with lots of crispy skin.

Dark meat it is!

Dark day of, white for leftovers!

Dark and mmmmmoist.

Same answer as last time. Where is my free turkey!? I only have one so far. And it's only 18 pounds. To feed 6 people. Uh, OK, maybe I don't need another one.

Dark all the way

Dark meat, white is too dry.

I love them both.. but if I had to pick White meat is my favorite to just eat by itself... Dark meat though is my favorite when cooking as its great in soups and makes excellent taco and stir fry!! I love turkey!

delicious white meat.

dark, with some crispy skin.

dark meat, for sure.

dark meat, agreed.

dark meat, for sure.

Dark. More flavor and juicier!

Dark of course. If it has to be white, it has to have gravy....

dark meat!!!!!!

Please pass the white meat! Thanks!

White meat only

White meat please.

White breast meat all the way.
