The Beaujolais Is Coming: 'I'll Drink to That'
It's that time of year again—casks of Beaujolais Nouveau are wending their way towards eager drinkers. Fans of the youthful French vintage might want to check out a new book on the subject, I'll Drink to That: Beaujolais and the French Peasant Who Made It the World's Most Popular Wine.
Author Rudolph Chelminski will be in Bay Area today and tomorrow, signing copies and discussing the upcoming release.

I serve a lot of Beaujolais Nouveau. I usually buy a 1.5L if I can find it.
My in-laws lived in France and they appreciate the vin de table. It is a good, affordable table wine.
I think the concept of table wine is a european thing. Everyone should give Beaujolais Nouveau a try.

At the risk of sounding like a wine snob, let me offer the grinchlike opinion that this is a wine invented for publicity, with very few vinous virtues. It's vaunted "freshness" is just acidity that hasn't had a chance to blend with the rest of the tastes, it has less clear and luscious fruit flavor than it will have by Spring, and its Gamay character has hardly had a chance to emerge. The winemaking choices necessary to make it drinkable so early mean that there is no hope of its developing into better wine later. There is a lot of Beaujolais in the world, and this concoction was invented to offload some of it before its time and get some press notice in the process.
On the other hand, if you like the wine or the event or both, who am I to tell you you shouldn't?
