Cocoa Puffs: Gateway Drug to Veganism
PETA has created a guide to vegan foods found along your local grocery store's aisles called I Can't Believe It's Vegan. The goal is clearly to make it less painful for people to switch to a vegan diet, but factory-processed foods seem like they'd be far worse, both for the planet and for humans, than humanely raised animals. Nothing tastes better than a considered meal. [via Cooked Books]

That girl in the photo sort of scares me.

While the list is fascinating, it is also perplexing. Didja see the list of beverages? How does one indulge in chocolate-- from Ghirardelli to Nesquik "choco-product" without eating milk? Or Bisquik--would soymilk work in it (or water for that matter)? Maybe someone here could break it down for me--is soymilk an equal substitute for milk in cooking?

wow. BacOs - that creepy "smoked" smellin' fakin bacon in the plastic tube- I always thought that would offend a vegan. Guess I was wrong...I'm offended by them however.

Why do so many vegans spend so such much time trying to make their food look, and sometimes taste, like the meat products they are not eating? Tofu Bacon? Veggie Burger? Pressed Veggie BBQ Ribs?
Come On! You are vegan! Dont try and hide it with your fake meat looking products.

As a veg, I have two points:
1. I agree... that list really bothers me in that it still supports consuming transfats, processed oils and sugars, excessive packaging... boo. And the girl frankly *is* a bit scary.
2. Soymilk isn't a cure-all for a substitute. In hot chocolate and in baked goods, you'd never know, so for your question, yes, soymilk rocks. Try using it in coffee though ~ YUCK! It coagulates! Bluck.
3. Fake meats aren't about trying to fool anyone or about being "cool" like everyone else (yes, something I've been accused of). Not all veg*ns go veg bc they don't like some meats though... it's for environment, or health or animal cruelty, etc. I won't touch pork, but Gimme Lean "sausage" is dang tasty ~ drier than real sausage, but still really good. And *certain* fake-bacons are really good with tomato on a sandwich. And I don't have to worry about the saturated fats or cholesterol. :)
4. Yep, some veg*ns are downright obnoxious with forcing their views. I apologize for their behavior and hope not to be clumped with them. :)
OK, that was four points... sorry.
No matter what you're eating, enjoy it! Happy Serious Eats to you!

This amused me. The longest running vegetarian I knew was not very healthy. He was overweight, had high blood pressure and ate a lot of not so whole foods. He had been a vegetarian since 1976.
Being a vegan and making good choices are not mutually exclusive.
