Streep to Play Julia Child in 'Julie/Julia' Movie
And Amy Adams will play Julie Powell, the food bloggerturned-author whose book, Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, inspired the flick. And, so you know this tale of food-obsession is in good hands, Nora Ephron will direct. So says Variety.com. [via The Knife]

i don't get it. how can this be made into a movie? particularly with an actual julia child part....julie just included some notes about julia, it's not like they actually interacted with one another....i don't think i'm going to like all of the adapting the writers are going to have to do.

I'm right with ya, ceforrester.

I can see how it could be done in a good screenplay. And considering the high fantasy level that is part of most movies (Rattatouille comes to mind as well as that one with the hunky blond chef-guy with the woman chef suddenly-made-into-single-Mom who sort of bumbles around like an idiot in the situation till GCG (gorgeous chef guy) arrives to save her and her little niece from sure family disaster but I can not remember the name of the movie) and considering the high attraction that foodie-ism holds in the marketplace, I'd bet this movie will be well attended.
Nora Ephron has an excellent track record so that is a plus, no?

Oh, well.

I'm with ceforrester-how the heck will this make a movie? I loved the blog and the book, but I don't get it. When the tried to make Fast Food Nation into a fictional story, that was a bit of a disaster (in my opinion) so I'm concerned about trying to fictionalize this work, particularly with a role for Julia Child in the film... I do love food movies though, so I'll wait and see and reserve judgment until then.

I'm also confused. That is the last book I'd think someone would think to make into a movie. 3/4 of it is Julie, alone, whining. Maybe the ghost of Julia comes to cheer her up?
coconutlime at 9:01AM on 11/01/07
Karen, the title was No Reservations
susanl at 9:08AM on 11/01/07
I enjoyed the blog, did not like the book and storngly suspect that the movie will continue the downward slide. My opinions are not at all colored by resentment of the fact that I, too, went through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, albeit many years ago -- before blogging, even before personal computers -- and no one paid me any money for my efforts. No, sirree!

I don't think they care if we know what really happened. Julia passed and that means they can now immortalize her in film in some dramatic (artisitic license) way.
We epicureans and Juliaphiles are a small vocal minority and whomever they get to sponsor this flick (probably ever big name in kitchen this, appliance that) will lay out big cash now that Streep has signed on.

i liked the book and the blog. but i think they went a little on the unrealistic side with the casting. couldn't they get someone who looked even remotely like julie to play her?
also, unrelated but karen mentioned it so i will just say that i loved ratatouille.
lexophile at 10:51AM on 11/01/07
I think the Julia Child part will be shown as flashback vignettes like they are in the book. I don't think they're going to have them actually meet.
mayam at 11:49AM on 11/01/07
Jerzee, you hit the nail on the head.
For every one of use that appreciates the contributions Julia Child made, there's a half dozen others who only remember her as "the cooking lady with the funny voice" or the Dan Aykroyd sketch from Saturday Night Live.

I won't go to see the movie, if I go, which now I guess I have to (ha ha) because it's about Julia Child. For Julia Child I'll pick up her books to look at or even watch a DVD of her old shows. And I won't go because it's about Julie and Julia, which blog and a book never particularly grabbed me to enter the pages and stay there, though obviously it grabbed many people that way, and that's fine. Chacun sa gout, ya know.
I won't go to see it because I want to see someone who looks like Julie Powell and Meryl Streep has never gotten me inside a movie theater before.
I'll go for one reason. Nora Ephron directing. She's been involved in some very entertaining and succesful flicks in the past and I like her books, too. Her name to me is like money in the bank. Sign me up. Where do I pay my $8.50? When can I pay my $8.50 for my seat at the big screen cinema? My debit card is ready.
:)

Shouldn't Dan Akroyd play Julia?
ExpatChef at 1:39PM on 11/01/07
Now if that GCG in in that other movie I mentioned (No Reservations) played Julia I might go see it just for that.
Mmm hmmm.
Karen Resta at 3:37PM on 11/01/07
Karen Resta, you need to see the movie Mostly Martha. It is in German and is the movie upon which No Reservations is based. I thought Mostly Martha was a gem (haven' seen No Reservations).

expat chef, that made me laugh out loud.
i adored the blog, the book was mildly entertaining. but julie powell is a vastly amusing writer who rekindled our interest in the wonderful julia child, and i hope she got a bundle of money from the film rights. she deserves it.

I just came across an essay by Nora Ephron last night while trying to finish reading the massive tome that is American Food Writing Anthology edited by Molly O'Neill.
This essay, written in 1970, it is as timely and entertaining today as it was thirty-seven years ago. The Food Establishment - Life in the Land of the Rising Souffle (Or Is It the Rising Meringue?)
The knowledge and humor shown in this essay leaves me even more assured than before that the direction of this film will be graceful and more-than-competent.

They are filming this movie on my street in astoria tomorrow morning. I hope Meryl Streep is there! HOOOOOOO I'll take pictures if I see anything good.
Heidii at 9:45PM on 04/16/08
So... I don't know if technically I'm allowed to say this, but I saw a screening tonight and absolutely LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meryl Streep & Amy Adams are fantastic and the movie is well directed with fantastic moments throughout. You would be a fool if you loved food and did not go see this movie. Wait... Correction, anyone who doesn't go see this movie is a fool. I can't believe it doesn't come out until 09! I'm calling my mom tomorrow (avid food fan) to tell her she needs to be there on opening day.
No Joke. It is WONDERFUL!
(and I'm not going to say anything else or I might get sued.)
Also, I DO NOT work in the entertainment biz. I'm just a girl who saw a GREAT movie!!!!!!!!!
HollyGirl5091 at 3:40AM on 09/17/08
Oh, and she totally pulls off Julia without ANY problems.
Oscar buzz... you heard it from me first.
HollyGirl5091 at 3:42AM on 09/17/08
I can't wait
