What's Your Go-To Weekday Breakfast?
Everyone, or just about everyone, has (or should have) and needs a go-to breakfast, the one they eat just about every weekday morning without thinking, a breakfast that is easy to prepare, can be eaten while reading the paper, and is a breeze to clean up. It should be reasonably filling, not too fattening, and nutritious according to some objective standard.
Your go-to breakfast can't be bacon and eggs or pancakes with sausage, because those are too unhealthy, fattening and time-consuming. Either of those could be your weekend go-to breakfast, but that's not what we are talking about here.
One of my most enduring memories of my dad, who died when I was 12, was watching him every morning eat his go-to breakfast of a Thomas' English muffin, farmer's cheese, and lingonberry jam. My wife's weekday go-to breakfast is currently a container of 2% Fage Greek Yogurt, and before that it was Brown Cow Maple Cream Top Yogurt. A little austere, a little too tart for my taste, and it has no crunch, but fine choices nonetheless.
Mine is a toasted Kossar's bialy, a schmear of cream cheese, and a glass of Minute Maid light limeade. Let me explain why.
What is a bialy? In her definitive book The Bialy Eaters, Mimi Sheraton describes a bialy as "the squashy, crusty, onion-topped bread roll eaten as an alternative to the bagel." She then goes on to say that "I cannot remember when I first ate one of these fragrant rolls, but surely it was addiction at first bite, starting with the mouthwatering scent of onions and yeast and the crisp bread's affinity for sweet butter and fluffy cream cheese."
Sheraton and I don't agree on much, but we both share a passion for these rolls that a cheeky waiter at New York's Barney Greengrass restaurant once described to an uninitiated friend of mine as the Jewish English muffin.
A toasted bialy (and you must toast a bialy, unless you get one fresh out of the oven) is the perfect vehicle for cream cheese or butter. It's light and substantial, crunchy and pliant, and just salty, yeasty, and oniony enough. Though many bagel bakeries across America sell holeless bagels they call bialys, in reality only a handful of bakeries in New York still make an authentic bialy, which is made with a completely different kind of dough than a bagel, and is simply baked—rather than boiled and then baked as a traditional bagel is. Bialys ship and freeze beautifully, and, thankfully, Kossar's on Grand Street in New York City, arguably the preeminent bialy baker in America, sends them all over the country.
My cream cheese of choice is Breakstone's whipped cream cheese. It's lighter than than those Philadelphia brand bricks. If your grocery store doesn't carry Breakstone's, buy Philadelphia brand whipped cream cheese. I have discovered another commercially available whipped cream cheese, Zausner's Original Amish Recipe , I like even more (it's slightly saltier), but I've only been able to buy it on Cape Cod. And my absolute favorite cream cheese in the world is Zingerman's farmstead cream cheese which is not whipped, but is wonderfully tart and creamy and has larger curds than commercial cream cheese. It has the rough-hewn texture of farmer's cheese.
I drink the Minute Maid Light Limeade with my bialy and cream cheese because it's simultaneously tart and sweet, has a nice spicy, citrusy tang, and very few calories. My first choice for a breakfast beverage to accompany my bialy would be fresh-squeezed orange juice, but I try to save the calories. Maybe I'm being silly here, as I believe an eight-ounce glass of orange juice has less than 100 calories.
So that's my weekday go-to breakfast. It has less than 250 calories, and is oh so satisfying.
I think there's a chance my dad would have switched to it if he could have seen this post.

Since I was in grade school, (i'm forty), my go-to weekday breakfast has been Morningstar farms soy breakfast sausage. One minute in the mic and off you go.
I've always thought these to be underated.

I also eat the same breakfast daily. I have a cup of black coffee(my only cup for the day), 2 slices of whole grain bread with blueberry preserves. Mid morning I have Fage yogurt,0%fat, with fruit and honey.

My usual weekday breakfast is either fruit yogurt with cereal mixed in + glass of grapefruit juice, or whole grain toast with almond butter, honey and flaxseeds, + grapefruit juice.

one slice toast with melted feta cheese (inasmuch as feta "melts" in the toaster oven) with an egg on top (cooked in the microwave in a little microwave egg cooker for 36 seconds). Alongside it, a piece of seasonal fruit and a cup of coffee.

1 cup Scott's Porage oats w/ honey & milk.
1cup plain yogurt with mixed fresh berries.
Shockingly I rarely eat beef for breakfast but lets keep that between us....

Feta cheese in the morning? That's love.
I'll stick with walnuts and granola mixed in with yogurt. I add fruit whether or not the yogurt already has it. It's all about texture.

Actually our everyday breakfast IS bacon and eggs: turkey bacon and a veggie omelet, with whole wheat toast. It only takes about 20-25 minutes.

Cereal! Usually it's a mixture of Grapenuts and raisen bran with soymilk and a sliced banana. When I'm at home, I go for better cereals (like anything made by Barbara's, with a little bit of homemade granola tossed in). But at college, the selection of non-crappy cereals is rather limited. And, of course, weak dining-hall coffee - the college student's staple.

Since I start work very early I have my breakfast at my desk. It's the same most days. A banana, yogurt and some other fruit. Today it's black seedless grapes but this summer we've had plenty of great Rocky Ford melons to choose from.

Wasa flat bread (rye) with any variety of good things: almond butter, homemade hummus, sliced avocado, smoked mackerel, sliced boiled egg, etc. Plus a piece of fruit and a big glass of water.
Alternately, quinoa porridge with nuts and seeds, sometimes with a spoon or two of full fat yogurt mixed in.

When they're in season (which they suddenly aren't unfortunately), I'll go for fresh blueberries and mueslix in vanilla yogurt. When it's cold out, I'll fix a bowl of miso. If I'm out shopping, I'll either see what kind of soup they've got, or maybe pick up a sandwich.

During the summer - yogurt with cereal and fresh fruit. Winter - oatmeal with brown sugar, milk and a few almonds. Coffee when I get to work.

a banana to form a nice base in my belly for the subsequently more acidic fruits of either clementines, peaches, plums, nectarines and/or berries like strawberries, raspberries or blueberries. I wait about half an hour then I eat some plain yogurt and nuts, like raw almonds or walnuts. I drink water, or sometimes before I go to bed I leave out a pint glass of water with a bag of green tea in it to steep overnight.

Boring but it does the trick: A have a whole grain rice cake with a dollop of cashew butter and a dollop of Polaner's all-fruit (no added sugar) in strawberry or apricot. It's satisfyingly crunchy, tastes good, and has protein to get through the morning.

I make a smoothie from a recipe in the detox cookbook put out by Morgan Spurlock's girlfriend: a frozen banana, a cup of frozen raspberries, a handful of walnuts, a tablespoon each of flax seeds and spirulina powder, half a cup of yoghurt, and 2 cups of soy milk. The color is vile (raspberries + spirulina = blech), but the taste is deliriously good, and I feel virtuous for the rest of the day.

I rotate three choices:
1) peanut butter on multigrain toast
2) salmon salad (Whole Food's... no mayo) on lavosh crackers
3 egg sandwich using Trader Joe's multigrain English muffin... delish!
And always a huge cuppa tea... Lyon's from Ireland.

for some reason i love rice crispies cereal with fresh cut up strawberries in it, my fav summer breakfast. for cold mornings i do plain microwave quick oats made with milk, with couple spoons brown sugar, spoon pure maple syrup, dash of salt, and chopped toasted almonds. cheaper and better tasting than those flavored instant oatmeal packets and less artificial junk in it.

Mine is a quick fried egg sandwich that takes barely more time to make than it does to toast the bread. Throw the egg pan on medium-high heat, get out two eggs, a slice of cheese and the Hellman's, and grab two slices of bread. Drop the bread in the toaster, olive oil in the pan, crack the eggs, break the yolks and season. When the toast pops up, flip the eggs. Mayo one slice, drop cheese on it, then the egg, Mayo the other slice, drop it on top, and it's done. As to that "too unhealthy, fattening and time-consuming", Ed, I respectfully disagree with the first two, and have it down to a science too much for the third. :-)

Oh, wheetabix! Thank you, ceforrester! I used to eat it every day when I was in England, but alas it's seems that's one of those location-based addictions and I haven't kept up the habit in the US. These days, my go-to brekkie is cottage cheese and whatever fruit is in season (frozen summer fruit in depths of winter).

or - and this is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE if you like peanut butter (who doesn't?) - warm a spoonful of PB in the microwave. warm some honey and stir the two together. add sliced bananas, ground flax seed and Smart Start Cereal and enjoy. Peanut Butter Delight. I turned a friend on to it and she emailed yesterday saying she's had it something like 45 consecutive days and she's "in love with her breakfast." Give it a whirl.

wow alot of people eat breakfast! I will admit, i was never much of a breakfast eater. In an effort to boost my protein intake, I mix my morning iced coffee with 2 scoops of whey protein powder. it comes out to 220 calories and keeps me satisfied untill 1 in the afternoon. (I use whey protein powder rather than soy, because soy protein has been proven to boost estrogen levels)

Coffee, Fage yogurt, and a fruit, usually a banana. Sometimes I'll have natural peanut butter on whole grain toast. Always start with a cup of coffee.

When I get to work, it's Brown Cow yogurt...either one of the cream tops, or the low fat...depends on what I grab from the fridge that morning. About 2 hours later it's usually Cheerios -dry, and some o.j....but sometimes it's toast or an english muffin instead of the Cheerios. We have a local restaurant - Quaker Bonnet - right down the street from my work, that makes the best homemade english muffins....they are more like a sandwich roll size...and absolutely heavenly!

Toasted whole wheat pita (the pocketless kind) spread with roasted red pepper hummus, and a cup of coffee with milk.
Although this morning I had two leftover Hill Country spareribs...and at least once a week it's leftover takeout Chinese.

okay, i admit it, my priority in the morning is making sure i have coffee. whether i make and take or pick up on the way to work, the only thing i NEED to ingest in the morning is coffee.
the real reason i rarely eat a real breakfast is time. i'm NOT a morning person (hence the above statement re: coffee) so my goal is always to sleep in as late as humanly possible in the morning before hurrying to get ready and out the door for work.
THUS, if i eat breakfast, it must be something i can grab running out the door as a sort of afterthought - if i am even awake enough to have an afterthought...
THEREFORE, i usually end up with a granola bar and, if i have actually gone grocery shopping, a piece of fruit or yogurt. if i have been lazy or forget to grab something, breakfast becomes salt water taffy or whatever other candy i have stashed at my desk.

It's amazing that I can't eat the same thing for dinner within a 2 week span, but I can eat the same damn breakfast every single day. A bowl of cereal, always a combination of two different varieties. Currently, I'm working on Kashi Cinnamon Harvest along with Kashi Heart to Heart Oat Flakes and Wild Blueberry Clusters with soy milk. A glass of OJ always goes along with it. From start to finish, probably 5 minutes, with no major appliances or sharp utensils involved.

Even if I'm going out for breakfast or brunch, I never miss my TJs non-fat yogurt (or 0% Fage). And most days it is Nature's Path Flax Plus or Barbara's Cin Puffins w/ dried cherries in the yogurt. I am happy to get out of bed thinking about my breakfast. MMmm.

Sometimes I enjoy natural yogurt with fruit, nuts and seeds- bring on the full fat. Low fat anything is just plain wrong.
And I'd like to say that I don't just get people who eat only half a piece of fruit- why not eat the whole thing??

I do yoga in the mornings and i dont have time to eat so I eat protein bars.
I choose ones that have up to 200 calories.
On days when i don't have yoga, I have toasted blueberry waffles with a bit of peanut butter.

On weekdays: I always have one a half slices of spelt toast with yogurt cheese. One is too little, two too much! Iced tea in the summer, hot tea with milk in the winter.
On weekends: Scrambled eggs with cheese and leeks or scallions, tomato on the side, a slice of toast and maybe a sausage if I'm in the mood.

Ed, I'm curious about your Mimi Sheraton comment. I think her book, FROM MY MOTHER'S KITCHEN is one of the best food memoirs.
For breakfast, I like the habitual. Currently that is Organic Valley cottage cheese (would that it were English) and Trader Joe's Greek style yogurt with banana and some sort of acid fruit. My all time favorite, but no longer available to me, was halved, toasted La Brea Bakery multi-grained "baugette" with a mild feta and thick sliced tomato. And always strong, black coffee

Since I love my bed and can barely leave it in the morning, I don't eat until I get to work. I used to keep milk in the fridge there for cereal (my favorite, could-eat-it-for-every-meal food), but that got annoying. So now it's instant oatmeal in a cup. Generic (sorry Quaker, I'm poor!) lower sugar apples and cinnamon costs me about $3 for a month's worth.

Breakfast is half a cup of coffee with half half-and-half and half fat-free half-and-half.
Second breakfast, when I get round to it, is the second half of the coffee with a toasted whole-wheat English muffin, 1/4 cup of 2% Fage (I LOVES my Fage!) and 2 oz. smoked salmon, with some capers, chopped red onion, and/or minced scallion on top.
Alternative is a smoothie with frozen banana, frozen berries, Fage, and OJ, with a scoop of whey protein powder and maybe some flax seeds.
Other alternative is oatmeal (steel-cut porridge oats, thanks -- yeah, the kind that takes 30 minutes to cook. I work at home) with my beloved Whey Low (the only sugar sub I can stand), a sprinkle of coarse salt, and a few toasted walnuts.
I guess my breakfasts vary a fair amount. But lunch is usually either fruit salad (in summer, and if I didn't have fruit in the morning) or lentil and vegetable soup. Fage 2% usually crops up with these options as well.

I have a rotation because I get bored easily. :)
+one egg, cheddar and tomato on toasted multigrain bread
+Greek yogurt with walnuts and honey
+cottage cheese or a hard boiled egg and a glass of vegetable juice (I prefer Knudsen Very Veggie, but V8 will do in a pinch)
+ricotta from Saxelby's with apricots, pine nuts and a drizzle of balsamic
I love oatmeal but I generally only eat it during the cooler months of the year. When I do I dress it up with blueberries and almonds, or butter and sea salt, or a few dashes of hot sauce, or a little grated sharp cheese.
I drink iced Earl Grey in the summer, hot tea the rest of the year. I'll occasionally have coffee with milk instead. And I drink a ton of water.

Coffee #1 (milk, no sugar, brewed one cup at a time)
Whole-wheat toast with peanut butter or cashew butter
Smoothie (banana, yogurt, frozen fruit, flax meal, apple juice)

I am one of those people who is ravenously hungry in the morning, so I have to eat a pretty big breakfast. And I love sleeping, but I love coffee just a little bit more!

i get super cranky if i don't have breakfast with in an hour of waking up, so i always have something before i leave home. usually, 2 eggs cooked sunny side up with salt and pepper, and a piece of toast or a tortilla (to get all the yolk yumminess)
when i run out of eggs, i'll have oatmeal with coffee flavored silk (rather than cooking it, i serve it as soon as i get up, shower and get ready, and eat it right before i leave. that way it isn't mushy, which i hate, but its soft enough to eat).

You guys need to grow up. Wow, yogurt and toast, I'm sure the highlight of your week is going out for a wine cooler with your coworkers.
I'll usually pop a couple biscuits in the oven, then slice up a potato and get that going with olive oil in a pan. After a while I add onion, red or yellow bell pepper, and garlic. Plate up the potatoes then top the biscuits with a fried egg and a couple slices of American cheese.
After a breakfast like that I'm all set to be bored at work for 8 hours and not get hungry till dinner time.
