Illustrated Guide for Espresso Noobs
For people like me, who know almost nothing about the family of espresso-centric drinks, Lokesh Dhakar's illustrated guide to espresso drink composition may be helpful. The illustrations won't help you much if you want to make the drinks, but they're great for providing a simple overview of the ingredients. [via Boing Boing]

These illustrations provide me with a clear picture of the proportions I can expect when ordering espresso drinks--thanks!

The non-linguistic representation of different espresso-based drinks was nice. The only thing I wish were different would be to show the different sized cups that one might use for each drink. I have three different sizes that I use frequently: a one ounce cup for a single shot of espresso, a 5.5 oz cup for a traditional cappuccino, and a 12 oz mug for lattes and good ol' fashioned American black coffee.
Otherwise, the blogger gets the ratios about right. Personally, I'll take a traditional cappuccino -- two ounces of espresso, 2 ounces of steamed milk, and capped with a creamy micro-foam (not the dry stuff that you get at Starbucks or most restaurants).

Thanks for including the picture of the flat white ... but why don't American cafe's serve them? I don't like foam! Flat whites are very popular down under where I hail from. The only place I've found so far that serves them in NYC is the Australian Cafe Ruby's.

At the Italian cafe close to my house, you can order anything "senza schiuma" and you won't get foam. I had never heard of the flat white until this posting -- perhaps it is solely a down under thing?
