Original Carvel Ice Cream Store to Close
The original Hartsdale, New York, location of the Northeast-based ice cream franchise Carvel is closing after 71 years of operation to make way for a retail mall due to the waning hunger for ice cream from local residents. Even if you've never been to a Carvel shop, you've probably reaped the rewards of founder Tom Carvel's advancements in the field of ice cream technology, as he invented the soft-serve ice cream machine. All Cookie Pusses around the world hang their vanilla and chocolate ice creamlayered heads in sorrow.
Wait—you don't know who Cookie Puss is? Read the full story about this ice cream wonder, a "celestial person" in the shape of an upside-down hot air balloon with an ice cream cone for a nose. Watch his amazing ability for interstellar travel in this Carvel commercial from 1982:

This is a shame. My family and I have so many good memories of eating ice-cream cones from Carvels, when we lived on Staten Island, NY. It was a ritual to eat pizza from Joe's Pizza and then drive a short distance to Carvel's.
When we moved away we didn't come into contact with the wonderful taste of Carvel's until the 1980's when a few locations opened in the Washington, DC metro area. Later the company sold their frozen products in our grocery stores. It was never the same as when we were young.
Glad to have read this post. Please visit my site sometime.

On another note, I belong to a wonderful web log site community called www.BlogCatalog.com. It is a place you can visit first and take a look see. I do believe your site would be very appreciated there. It was nice to read you. Cheers!

I agree, Carvel ice cream definitely signifies my suburban childhood. Flying saucers, birthday cakes (with extra crunchies)...
Patton Oswalt has a very funny routine on his Feeling Kinda Patton album all about Tom Carvel. I couldn't find a link to the full routine on line, but the whole album is very good.
