Choc Rocks? Or Pop Rock-o-late?

20070831popchocolate.jpgWhichever you fancy, this Elite-brand Israeli candy bar morphs the wonderful worlds of chocolate and Pop Rocks. Just your average milk chocolate squares at first, but, wait for it—wait for it—an atomic fireworks show in your mouth! The delicious drumfire lingers for a while, too. Even the candy bar's wrapper depicts a half-smirking cow surrounded by explosive ka-boom designs. (He knows what's up).

Though it's not technically Pop Rocks, but chocolate with Pop Rock tendencies, would the exploding tummy urban legend apply here? For all we know, Mikey from the Life cereal commercials actually "died" in Israel after swilling a cola with one these. Let's just assume the cocoa has magical properties, mitigating any stomach swelling. And if not, sorry Mikey, but it's worth the risk. Bring on the pop rock-o-late.

If you've got any friends in Israel (luckily I did), start sucking up to them. Or, know a store with imported Israeli foods? Get over there. This stuff is mind-blowing. Wait, mouth-blowing.

I wonder if that bar is like Smarties Xplosions, which is a chocolate bar with pop rocks-infused Smarties! I love it...after your done chewing it still pops around in the crevices of your mouth. (I should've bought more when I went to Canada.) I suppose the Israeli bar would have more popping action since it's not...pop rocks encased in chocolate encased in candy shell encased in chocolate..

I want some. -__-

Across from Hummus Place on St. Marks near Ave A (one of the best snacks or light dinners in the area), there's a great little Israeli grocery store with these Pop rocks candy bars and other Israeli goodies. I'd highly recommend also picking up some of the Pereg spice blends, especially the Hawaj Marak (Yeminite Soup Spice) and Hawaj Cafe (Yeiminte coffee spices, to be sprinkled on your next espresso or turkish brew). Many of the kosher markets on the UWS and Brooklyn also carry Elite candies.

Oh man, this was one of my favorite snacks when I was working on an excavation in Israel a few years back. We once made Smores out of this, butter cookies, and strawberry marshmallows. It was...strange, but tasty.

S'mores! That was my exact fantasy when first introduced to this. But, strawberry marshmallows?? You just one-upped the fantasy like crazy. Talk about esoteric s'mores.

I can't believe I missed this post back in the day. I worship this stuff and was looking all over for it until my cousin decided to send me some from Israel. I am savoring those chocolate bars like none other!
