Ice Cream and Frozen Custard: Serious Eats Father's Day Gift Idea #1
For me Father's Day is the only day of the year my wife lets me eat ice cream right out of the container. Every other day she insists that I take the pint or half-gallon container out of the freezer, use an ice-cream scooper to scoop two scoops maximum into a bowl and then return the remaining ice cream to its rightful place in the freezer. All these polite steps seem so unnecessary to me, but my wife claims they are civil necessities that go a long way towards establishing domestic harmony in our house.
So have your Dad join me in this one day-only, incredibly delicious bit of caveman behavior by ordering him some of America's best ice cream or frozen custard delivered straight to his door.
Milwaukee and St. Louis residents vy for the right to call their city the nation's best frozen custard town, so why not let your Dad answer the question himself by getting him custard from Ted Drewes in St. Louis and Kopp's in Milwaukee. It turns out that frozen custard ships incredibly well.
Ted Drewes ships Monday through Thursday, but at the moment it is only taking mail-orders by phone or fax. Eight pints costs anywhere from $20-$24 (depending on the flavor) plus $75 for shipping. Ted Drewes also sends their famous concretes (thick shakes) via mail.
Kopp's ships only on Tuesday via 2 day-air. Ten pints of Kopp's costs $75 plus shipping (to NYC I found out it costs $47.34 to ship to my zipcode). But if you don't get it together to order today you can always get your dad a Kopp's On-Line Gift Certificate. And that way he gets to pick the flavors.
When it comes to frozen custard I tend to be a purist and order vanilla, but strawberry is a fine choice as well.. Kopps' butter almond is pretty swell, too. Ahh, you can't go wrong with this stuff.
If your dad's taste runs more to regular ice cream the good folks at Graeter's in Cincinatti ship their decadently rich and creamy Frenchpot ice cream. It costs $70 for six pints or $110 for twelve. Make sure you include the scary good Black Raspberry Chip in your order. You'll make your Dad really happy. Plus, blackberries are an effective anti-oxidant, so you can claim that this flavor is a health food. How great is that?
What's your favorite ice cream or frozen custard (shippable or not)? Serious Eaters want to know.
