Death By Oreos, and Other Tasty Things

deathbyoreos.jpg

Daniela Edburg's photography exhibit, Drop Dead Gorgeous, shows women in scenes of death or being attacked by popular foods, including Oreos, cotton candy, M&Ms and Lifesavers. However, in her interview with the Morning News she explains that the food isn't evil—we just happen to have love/hate relationships with the food:

When you look at a beautiful package of Oreos everything is new and shiny and attractive, and there is the promise of the sweetness and the pleasure, and then you go and open it and eat it and all you have are a stomachache, crumbs and garbage

i think this work is really disturbing... and her interview completely skims the surface.

"That which gives me pleasure one minute, causes guilt the next. I am surprised at how much I like the products I consume, but, if you stop for one second to think about it, it’s absurd. Yet, you can’t stop. [The work] is not a criticism it’s just an exaggeration of my own reality."

Um, how about a criticism? The ambivalent and destructive relationship with food that many experience (and society promotes, especially for women) is amplified in these photos - not to mention a sick glorification ("gorgeous") of violent imagery and unconscious women- let's just say I'm not satisfied by her explanation, nor the Serious Eats coverage. Robyn, there's a bit of analysis missing on your part!
