Cook the Book: 'The Summer Shack Cookbook' Giveaway
When you spend Memorial Day through Labor Day sitting in an air-conditioned office, it's easy to forget that it's summer. But as I break out the Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts for an upcoming trip to the Jersey Shore, I'm jolted into the reality of the season.
It's a season for clam-digging, lobster-steaming, fried boardwalk fare, and grilled corn—just a handful of the many shore foods covered in Jasper White's Summer Shack Cookbook. White is proprietor of The Summer Shack mini-chain of restaurants, which serve his version of comfort food—the simple and fresh fare he was raised on as a boy growing up on that same Jersey Shore I'll be visiting soon.
More than just recipes, the book offers how-tos for catching seafood at the source and the equipment and tips you'll need to cook it.
And, as is custom now on Serious Eats, we've got a number of copies to give away. Just leave a comment here telling us what your favorite shore food is and where you get it. Nine (9) winners will be chosen at random from the comments section at the end of the week. Commenting will be open until Friday (June 22) at 9 p.m. ET. The usual Serious Eats contest rules apply.

I don't think anything can beat good ole clam chowder.

My favorite Jersey shore food is the steak sandwich at Midway:
Midway Steak House
Webster Ave & Boardwalk.
Seaside Heights, NJ.(732) 830-2666
It's pretty much a steak-um smothered with processed cheese-food, peppers and onions on a hoagie roll... I would never want to see the calorie count, but damn it's good.

I live in Indiana & have never been to the Jersey Shore (or any shore). I would love to have the cookbook so I could pretend I was there this summer!

I live in Delaware, so when I see "shore food", I think NJ. But my favorite seaside food comes from Capt. Bill's Restaurant in Morehead City, NC. Served right on the water, surrounded by seagulls and hungry cats, the food is fresh off the boat. I like the fried fish dinner -- and the hush puppies are wonderful. That's one thing the north needs to adopt: hush puppies. Wish I was there right now.

For my sister's wedding on St. John, USVI, we rented a private boat one day and our Captain took us to the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke. We went to a secluded shack of a restaurant where the lobsters were caught 30 feet away and I had the best lobster roll of my life with a cold Red Stripe to boot. Life doesn't get much better than that for me!

Fried clams are the perfect way to end any beach trip, in my opinion.

Oyster po'boy (or any po'boy for that matter). Preferrably in Galveston, Tx. I like the Saltwater Grill, but a po'boy make me happy no matter where I get it.
I haven't been to New Orleans in years, but Shrimp Uggie at Uglesich's in New Orleans was heaven. I think they might have closed forever due to Katrina. This makes me very sad.

I was brought up in Brooklyn, N.Y.,and as a kid ,I visited my grandmother in Brighton Beach. We would walk on the boardwalk and my mouth would water until I bought a potato knish. Later in my life, I would go t o Nathan's in Coney Island, with my boyfriend(eventually husband) , and have a softshell crab sandwich, and fries-my favorite meal. Today, I go to the Jersey Shore, and wherever I go, I find the freshest cherrystone clams, and I still look for softshell crabs. I've made myself hungry just writing about it !!!

Florida is where we "beach" most of the time. Around the Destin area primarily. I look forward to getting my hands (and teeth) on fresh Amberjack. Preferably blackened or grilled. We usually go to Buster's so my husband can take advantage of their fresh and cheap oysters. You cannot beat the oyster-mania prices. ($1.99 for a dozen oysters on the half shell from 5-6 pm daily! ) They also serve a wonderful "real" key lime pie.

I am a New Orleanian who lived outside of Boston for 6 years and when I think of shore food, I can not help but think of Kelly's on the beach in Revere MA. I have had a lobster roll at the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport and they are good, but there is just something about Kelly's. They make a great lobster roll and the beef is fantastic.
I grew up on Roast beef PoBoys but I do love the roast beef joints in New England - rare beef and sauce on a bun. Kelly's is the best. Though I am sure that will spark controversy if only with my wife. Some how even the ginger ale taste better at Kelly's. It is definitely what I think of when someone mentions shore food.
P.S. intheyearofthepig, Uglesich's is closed maybe forever, but not because of Katrina. They actually closed before the storm. Anthony wanted to retire and the next generation did not want to take over. However, Anthony and Gail are rumored to be bored with retirement so ...

Simple, boiled lobster is the only shore treat I ever crave.
I have a few favorite places (one in Essex, MA, and another in Provincetown, MA, and the lobsters), but I think the best I've ever had is at the hard-to-find Lisa's Lobster House, In Georgetown, ME. The shack is on a pier, where the fishing boats pull up and unload the lobsters right in front of your eyes. Nothing fancy, but the freshest, most delicious lobsters I've ever tasted (and inexpensive, too!)

Clams - whole - either steamed or fried, made with Ipswich clams. Now that's summer. I don't think you can get these outside of New England.

I live about 10 minutes from the original Summer Shack in Fresh Pond. And I like their basic clam bake, complete with a hard-boiled egg.

Here in WNY, our shore food usually consists of charcoal grilled hot dogs....we don't eat Lake Erie fish!
The old stand by fish fry is always great though....homemade salads, and fresh fried haddock...can't get much better than that!

I live on the great lakes, in Sarnia Ontario. As I have mentioned before on this site, it applies here to. Along the waterfront are scattered frie trucks. Without a doubt the best in the area. Bridge fires (or poutine!) under the bridge!

Alas, my favorite shore food is no longer available in it's original form. My mother grew up in Rhode Island and her father was the cook in the family. He made the best clam chowder. It was a brothy, tomato-laced chowder that was thickened with unsalted soda cracker crumbs. Every bite was laden with fat bits of freshly shucked and stewed clams. My mom and uncle can make it, but they take short cuts like using canned lams. The horror! Likewise my grandfather's "clam cakes". These are just chopped clams in a soft batter that are deep-fried and to die for. Sigh. Some memories just can't ever be recaptured!

Steamed clams from, um, my house.
Step one: go to the beach from 3-7 (because it's not as crowded at that time and the sun isn't as dangerous)
Step two: walk two blocks out of our way to the restaurant that also has a wee fish market to pick up clams.
Step three: While the clams are steaming in a white wine/tomato/onion mixture, cut up some veggies for a big salad, maybe steam some corn also.
Step four: Mangia.
My parents got tired of rushing us home from the beach in order to get us kids all cleaned up just to go wait 2 hours for a table at a mediocre restaurant, so they started cooking more dinners at our rented shore house. Plus, we're all very pale, so it's not good for us to be out in the sun during the high intensity hours (10-4). So our tradition is to go and stay late at the beach, then have some cheese & crackers with our cocktails while a quick, easy dinner is started. That's what "shore food" really conjures up for me.
That being said, the BBQ at Porky's outside of OCNJ is pretty darn good too. Plus, it's off the island so it usually isn't as packed as the other places.

A mountain of bright red, Old Bay-encrusted steamed-in-beer blue crabs (fresh from the Chesapeake). They have to be heavy crabs, every last impossible cranny packed with sweet, fat meat (the lusciousness of which contrasts beautifully with the tingly spice mix). Claws cracking, juices dripping, shell fragments flying everywhere... Savage, delectable heaven! Accompanied by fresh corn on the cob with creamy butter, salt and pepper. And ice cold, golden beer. Oh, how I miss Maryland sometimes...
ienefra at 3:02PM on 06/19/07
I have to vote for steamed blue crabs, just caught that morning, covered in Old Bay seasoning. I just had some this weekend, and nothing else says summer at the shore.
VioletHeather at 3:19PM on 06/19/07
Clams clams wonderful clams. Fried, in cornmeal batter, with tartar sauce, a cold beer, and the slightest dusting of sand blown in from the beach. Steamed, in a garlicky broth glistening with a peppery olive oil, with a few slices of spicy chorizo lurking at the bottom and a big hunk of crusty bread for dipping. Scattered on a white-clam pizza, with frizzles of bacon (or -- hello! -- herbalicious guanciale), lightly charred puddles of smoked and plain mozz, nuggets of roasted garlic, and thick slices of eye-poppingly ripe Jersey tomatoes on the side (plus, cause I'm a nice girl, a juicy endive salad with oregano and olives in the vinaigrette). Sliding through a bath of butter and garlic and white wine over a pile of spaghetti, with a blanket of chopped parsley to keep warm.
But best of all: cherrystones on the half-shell, so fresh they're practically crisp, and eaten with nothing at all except the sound of the surf and a whiff of smoke from somebody's backyard barbecue.
maggiesara at 3:43PM on 06/19/07
Forgot to say: hot-from-the-oven blueberry pie for dessert, made with hand-picked wild blueberries and a good lard crust, with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream on the side.

my favorite summer shore food is atlantic blue crabs! we lived on hilton head island,s.c. and would take our small boat up into the creeks, sit all day "fishing" for crabs with chicken necks on a string. once we had plenty we'd rush home to steam them with wine, beer and old bay seasoning- then the fest would begin! man it just don't get any better!!

Y'all make those clams and lobster rolls sound so tasty! Here on the other side I go for the fresh King Salmon. It's so easy to fix all the costal restaurants do a good job. Or just go down to the docks and buy one from that days catch right off the boat and take it home. The salmon from the cold Alaskan waters is too lean for my taste--I prefer the fattier central California fish. And as for crabs, the early season Dungeness crabs are mighty hard to beat.
skkip at 8:40PM on 06/21/07
Never been to the Jersey shore. But I spent several summers in New Bedford and the end of summer clam bake was the best! Fare caught that very morning and cooked on heated rocks! It fascinated me and I couldn't wait for the end of summer to stuff myself.
