Cupcakes: Calories in Disguise

cupcakes.jpg

Cute cupcakes pack a caloric wallop. One cupcake from Crumbs in New York City is the equivalent of three slices of pizza in terms of calories and fat. Now experiencing cupcake eater's remorse and wishing I could un-eat a few cupcakes.

Why would you call cupcakes "calories in disguise"? If it's a disguise, it's not a very effective one. I've been reading nutrition labels all my adult life, so it's not hard to guess that a cupcake bigger than my fist is going to have a full meal's worth of calories. And I cook, so I know about the butter and sugar that goes into them. I was pretty dumbfounded at the shock -- shock! -- expressed in that NPR piece. It's cake. What do you expect?

The calorie-bomb doesn't worry me so much, considering I could never eat a whole Crumbs cupcake in one sitting, nor will I want a cupcake again for a very long time.

My question, Is bigger better? Are they better than Magnolia?

Fiksu: I wondered how long it would it be before someone called me out on that headline. :) Yes, obviously cupcakes aren't a low calorie treat, but I would have guessed a cupcake to be the caloric equivalent of 1 slice of pizza instead of 3.

Recipe4Living, they are so much better than Magnolia. I would rate Billy's Bakery and Crumbs as the best cupcakes in the city. And I can eat one in sitting, and then spend the next morning at the gym cursing myself for doing do.

Oh! They also have mini-cupcakes, which are regular size. So you don't have to eat one as big as your head if you don't want to.
