Where Are All the Black Chefs?

Maureen Jenkins of the Chicago Sun-Times wants to know, where are all the black chefs? "In an age where chefs are celebrities and a regular TV gig turns the classically trained and mere personalities alike into culinary rock stars, the shortage of chefs of African descent is noteworthy if only by their striking absence."

I for one am very concerned with the what color the chef is who is cooking my food.. This way, I am able to rotate my meals around the race of the chef.. If I am eating the food of a particular race too often, I feel really guilty.. I want to know why there arent more Native American and Eskimo Chefs.. What a stupid ass question...

This is like asking, "Where are all the black hockey players?"

Hell, where are the anything-but-white-male-testosterone-driven-chefs period?

Quick, name all the women chefs in the top 100 restaurants in NYC. (Not fair to name April Bloomfield as she just won F&W's top chef award).

We have Marcus Samuelsson here in NYC. And there was Patrick Clark - maybe the first celeb chef - who was in at the start of Odeon. And his son, Preston who was or is with Jean Georges.

But it's shameful I have to think this hard and only come with 3 names.

Equally shameful is that in an industry that survives on the backs of Latino and Asian line cooks and dish washers there aren't more Latinos and Asians raing to the rank of sous or executive chef.

I'd love to know what percentage of students at CIA are African American and Latino.

Heh. You funny, Mr. Club (or may I call you Bite?).

FWIW, Michael Ruhlman did a similar piece in the NY Times a year ago:

timothy dean's bistro in baltimore. great food, and a really nice chef.

Yes WHERE ARE the black chefs?!

I've seen 2 on tv. 2!

Dean no....it isn't.

I have often wondered if people ever thought about "Black Chefs" being a true part of the real culinary world. As an Afro-American Chef it's often hard to figure out who's really true blue when asking for help. A great place to show case talent is on the Food Network, If only I could be seen. Watch out here I come....
