Ruth Reichl's Ultimate Chocolate Ice Cream: Choctal
I signed myself up for Gourmet's weekly email newsletter last month and am now puzzled as to why I didn't before, as it's a great short read and I always look forward to seeing it in my inbox. In this week's installment, Ruth Reichl spilled the beans on what she calls the perfect chocolate ice cream... which turns out to be four different flavors from a small company named Choctal!
She says their ice creams, "like single-vineyard wines, or single-barrel Bourbons, are made from the chocolate of a single region. You find yourself tasting the Kalimantan, with its sneaky sweetness, and then going to the deep coffee back-notes of the Costa Rican, the round, tropical intensity of the Ghana, and the light spiciness of the San Dominican." $5.99 a pint at Whole Foods, if you'd like to try them for yourself.

I tried Choctal yesterday, and I have to say that I was absolutely blown away! And I'm not even an ice cream eater, and I'm rarely eating any sweets.
First off, this is ultra high quality ice cream. It takes the ice cream experience to a whole new level. Unlike Haagen Daz and other national brands that have substantially diluted their quality for profit, Choctal uses high concentrated single source chocolate in their chocolate ice creams, and multiple levels of concentration of vanilla in its vanilla ice creams.
I did some research into this product, and found its website www.choctal.com. It turns out that its CEO, Marc Boatwright, travels to remote parts of the Costa Rican Rain Forest, Papua New Guinea, and other countries to look for the finest quality products. This company is very much into earth awareness, and assisting farms in third world countries.
I heard that Choctal is available in Trader Joes and Whole Foods. This is an absolute must for all chocolate lovers.
