Equal (Blue) vs. Splenda (Yellow): We Have a Winner

splendavsequal.jpgWell, I did my Equal vs. Splenda A-B test on a bowl of corn flakes yesterday. Splenda, as most of you Serious Eaters predicted, was the clear winner. I guess the courts are going to decide if the Splenda folks can make the advertising claim that it's made from sugar.

From my vantage point, Splenda actually tasted like sugar going down. Equal was just as sweet but had a slightly odd aftertaste. Not like that awful Sweet 'N Low aftertaste that could cut through Limburger cheese, just an odd metallic aftertaste that was none too pleasant.

From now on our household is going to be Equal-free and Splenda-filled.

Give me real sugar every time! Splenda leaves a strange taste in my mouth and does not taste like sugar to me. I get a major case of the aftertaste "bleeechs" when I accidently ingest any sugar substitutes.

FYI: Many places around the City will have the pink & blue right on the table, but keep the yellow in the back only if you ask for it. So ask for it. Makes the coffee sing.

You might want to consult everyone in your household first. Personally, I think sucralose has a far worse aftertaste than aspartame, and I know a lot of people who think similarly. There appears to be a big variation in how people perceive these flavors.

I just got some of the vanilla Splenda to try in my coffee and I endorse it completely. It's very good with no after taste. It took me a while to get used to the plain Splenda in my tea but I have now and don't find the after taste overwhelming.
