Use Microwave, Not Dishwasher, to Sterilize Sponges
You can nuke away 99 percent of bacteria on dirty sponges by sticking them in the microwave for two minutes, the BBC says, according to a study done at the University of Florida. Why has this never occurred to me?

I tried that once, and I blew out my microwave. Apparently, I am not alone in this. Now, I boil my sponges in a pot of water (I never replaced my microwave), which seems to work much better.

I tried this once - afterwards, I had to "de-stink" my microwave. I now put my sponges in the dishwasher everytime it is run. (With my elderly mother living in our house - that tends to be daily!)
