Roadfood: Louis' Lunch
Ride along with Jane and Michael Stern as they visit Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut. Louis' Lunch, in operation since the late 1800s, claims to have invented the hamburger in 1900, when a hurried customer asked for a quick meal he could eat on the go. With its unique gas grills and its strictly enforced no-ketchup policy, it's one of the quirky gems the Sterns are renown for ferreting out.

ABOUT JANE AND MICHAEL STERN
Jane and Michael Stern have written numerous books on road food, write the monthly column "Two for the Road" in Gourmet magazine, and run the website Roadfood.com, a review forum for one-of-a-kind mom-and-pop places like Louis' Lunch. We like Jane and Michael because their hunger for offbeat roadside eats knows no limit. Through their books and website, they've made it easy for the rest of us to find serious local eats, whether as a pit stop on a road trip or as destination in its own right.

Well I, for one, really enjoyed this video: it was great seeing Jane and Michael Stern live in action and I'm fascinated by the idea that ketchup does a disservice to a quality hamburger. I'll have to check this place out when, in my next life, I ace my SATs and get a scholarship to Yale.

There's no question that the best beef burgers have little use for ketchup - maybe a little Dijon mustard spread on the top bun, at most. (Dijon and hamburgers has food cred because Dijon is typically used in steak tartare.) What irks means just the tiniest bit is the idea that one is told how to eat their food. Face it, lots of people want/like ketchup on their burgers - just let the customer do what she wants, within reasonable limits. No ketchup, but toast is OK?

So cool to actually watch Jane and Michael-get them on the network! Next let's see them do the New Haven pizza tour-yummy! By the way-I love Louie's and thanks to Jane and Michael I recently drove 60 miles for a SuperDuper Weenie in nearby Fairfield Ct.

After tracking Jane's and Michael's food adventures for years on their site, it's great to see them in moving pictures. Could we see more video segments of them on the road like this one? It makes me salivate even more about hitting the road myself to uncover these delicious little culinary haunts.
